On this day in 1895 Joshua Slocum, of Briar Island, NS, leaves Boston to begin his solo around-the-world voyage on an 11 metre oystercatcher called Spray. First sailing to Yarmouth to refit he became the first man to circumnavigate the globe solo, returning from his journey on July 3, 1898. Also a talented writer, in 1900 he wrote a book about his journey: “Sailing Alone Around the World” which became an international best-seller. He mysteriously disappeared in November 1909 while aboard his boat enroute to the Amazon. Although a seasoned sailor, Slocum never learned to swim considering the skill to be useless.

Designed by Karen Weiland and Jens Müller of optik it won the anual competition for Corporate Design of the largest sailing event of the world.
